Upheaval In Nepal — September 2025

Many of you have asked about the situation in Nepal—the political and MicroAid’s work—during and after the recent upheaval.

A couple of months ago, the government cut off most social media access. This affected communication with our project manager, but we worked around the issue and continued our project.

The Gen-Z protesters (as they came to be called) took to the streets, where they were met with deadly fire from the authorities—21 young people were killed and 100 wounded. That was the last straw in what they saw as a corrupt and violent system. They rioted. They burned the parliament building to the ground and dragged other politicians and ex-politicians from their offices and homes and beat them up.

Gen-Z forced the resignation of the prime minister—and many others in the government fled. That chaos prompted the army to declare martial law and impose a total lockdown on the population that lasted almost a week. That was the scariest time for our project manager and our beneficiary families, because they were, literally, in the dark. 

Amazingly, the army coordinated, with the Gen-Z leaders, a relatively honest transfer of power to a former chief justice known for her anti-corruption career. It actually looks like there has been meaningful change.

As for our project, MicroAid is back to work. We have made steady progress on the house for our beneficiary family. We successfully cleared the old damaged house and are building new one on their small property at the end of a narrow alley.

We mix cement in the plaza and ferry it down the alley to the worksite.

Two slabs (floors) poured—we have one more to go.
